Importance of ICT training for teachers highlighted

It is important that the opportunity to get "fully trained" in ICT is given to teachers, it has been argued.

This is especially vital as pupils grow in confidence with the use of computers, communications director for the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services Elspeth Farrar suggested.

While noting that teachers' ICT knowledge will vary depending on their background, she commented that "not all teachers" will have the level of expertise that their pupils display.

Since the government requires schools to ensure that an element of ICT is incorporated in all subjects, Ms Farrar stated: "The teachers deserve to be allowed to be fully trained and confident and comfortable in using the technology."

According to Teachernet's key facts on ICT, there is an average of approximately one computer for every 6.2 children in primary schools, which increases to one for every 3.6 secondary student.

Within these, 85 per cent and 81 per cent of teaching staff in these schools respectively are reported to be confident or very confident in using ICT in their job.
