Teacher recruitment targets beaten

This year's targets for recruiting trainee teacher recruitment for key subjects has been exceeded, new figures suggest.

Statistics released today by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) show a sharp improvement in people applying to enter the profession.

For 2008-09, the number of trainee English teachers looks set to hit 3,000, there are likely to be 2,044 maths teacher trainees and science teacher recruitment will peak at 3,670.

And although this is the first time the TDA's annual recruitment target for science teachers has been beaten, it does not plan to stop here.

It is today launching a campaign to find an additional 6,600 teachers for the subject over the next two years, in order to fill predicted shortages.

"We need to encourage the best science graduates to become teachers, and this is what we will continue to do with the launch of today's campaign", stated TDA chief executive Graham Holley.

Trainees and newly qualified teachers in science and maths could be eligible for bursaries and golden handshakes.
