Gillard wants to attract "best and brightest" to teaching

The Australian government is "determined to fix" the education system by ensuring that there are "great teachers" in the schools that need them most, it has been stated.

Speaking in an interview on ABC2 this morning, education minister Julia Gillard added that putting new resources into disadvantaged schools is another major aim of the Rudd administration.

Ms Gillard also drew attention to the $500 million (£214 million) that the government is promising to ensure that the "best and brightest" are attracted to the teaching profession.

Furthermore, she told interviewer Virginia Trioli, there will be a focus on ensuring that the finest teachers are rewarded for their work through a national accreditation scheme.

"We want to find new ways of recognising highly accomplished teachers and rewarding them, particularly for teaching in the toughest of schools," stated the minister.

This week chancellor of the New York City department of education Joel Klein is visiting Australia to share his experiences about improving schooling.
