Conservatives propose introducing independent education providers

The Conservative party would propose a radical overhaul of the education sector should it be elected.

Shadow chancellor George Osborne told the Times he admired the initiatives other countries have taken in their bid to reform education services.

In an interview in the paper Mr Osborne said his party would follow the approach taken by Sweden, which had introduced independent providers into state education.

The result of introducing such a policy would "end of the state monopoly on the provision of state-funded education", he said.

"The result is that the quality of education for the children of Sweden has been improved," he added.

People new to teaching in the UK will note education is provided in the first instance by state funded schools, but also by new academies.

These academies bring private sector funding and have been championed by the current administration.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families explains that it takes up to 18 months from ministers agreeing on a new academy to it opening.
