Minister welcomes new childcare teaching course

Those planning to teach younger children in Scotland can now sign up to a new course.

In a bid to ensure that nursery and childcare workers are equipped with a professional qualification, the BA Childhood Practice was launched in universities this September.

Adam Ingram, Scotland's children's minister, visited Strathclyde University - which is offering the course - this week.

Graduates from the degree will have skills in line with the country's new Standard for Childhood Practice.

Mr Ingram stated that the students of this course are at the "forefront" of the drive to meet the government's aims.

"We firmly believe that investing in our children during their earliest years is central to influencing future life chances," he stated.

This includes ensuring that every young person in Scotland has the opportunity to "reach their potential".

A joint policy statement on early years and early intervention was published by the Scottish government and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities in March this year.
