'Parents value skills'

Almost all parents (90 per cent) say they believe schools should offer a variety of courses which teach vocational as well as academic skills.

Skillfast UK, which represents the fashion and textiles industry polled 3,000 parents and discovered 78 per cent of respondents thought children were not well prepared enough for the rigours of working life, the BBC has reported

According to Linda Florance, the organisation's chief executive, academic subjects should not be the only valid challenge.

Ms Florance explained that the business community is also supportive of her organisation's calls for more hands-on options.

She told the broadcaster: "As an economy, we need entrepreneurs and skilled practitioners, as well as academics.

"Our education system should value both."

Educators in teaching jobs in Milton Keynes employed by schools adopting the government's new diplomas could have more practical lessons to deliver - the new courses support students to gain work experience and life skills, as well as written qualifications.
