More free school meals for children

The government has announced plans to invest an additional £35 million in free school meals for pupils across the country following the success of three pilot schemes, a news report has said.

Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families Ed Balls said that thousands of pupils and parents will feel the benefit from the start of the new school year and urged local authorities to bid for money to support the programme in their region, according to the Scholastic Education.

All local authorities wishing to take part in the programme are required to express their interest by 17 February.

In other news, the Museum, Libraries and Archive Council has teamed up with the National Literacy Trust to launch a new commission that will examine the future of library provision in schools across England.

Between January and March, the commission will ask education professionals and local authorities to submit their ideas and views about the future of school libraries as part of a review that will look at their definition and role in the 21st century, Scholastic Education has reported.
