New head for historic York school

St Peter's school in York has named Leo Winkley as it new head teacher, a local news report has said.

The private school, which is one of the oldest in the country, said the new head teacher will undertake his new duties from September, the York Press has reported.

Mr Winkley, who is currently the managing head at the senior school of Bedales School in Hampshire, will replace Richard Smyth, who left the school in December to become head of a new state-funded academy in Preston.

"I am thrilled to be taking on the leadership of St Peter's a forward-looking school with a long and illustrious history," he said.

In other news, the head teacher of St Michael's Catholic High School in High Elms Lane, Watford, has met the prime minister at a reception to honour the most improved schools in the country.

John Murphy was among the 150 head teachers who attended the event hosted by Gordon and Sarah Brown at 10 Downing Street.
