Performance of seven-year-olds is "positive", says schools minister

Schools minister Diana Johnson has said she is pleased with the performance of primary school children at aged seven.

Ms Johnson's comments followed the government's release of data that showed improved performance in some subjects.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families revealed 81 per cent of seven-year-olds are up to level 2 standard in writing - a one per cent increase on last year.

It showed that despite 84 per cent having achieved a similar standard in reading, one per cent fewer children of this age were managing to attain the level expected in maths.

“Whilst this year’s dip in maths is disappointing, overall the trend is a positive one with standards remaining high in recent years," she explained.

Educators interested in teaching jobs in Bedfordshire are likely to be closely involved with the government's every child matters initiative.

The programme aims to ensure every child gets the chance to be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution to society and achieve economic well-being.
