'GCSE results due Thursday'
August 25 2009
Student across the UK are soon to receive their GCSE results, which are due this Thursday.
People in teaching jobs in Hertfordshire will be hoping their efforts will be reflected in their pupil's grades.
The examination has come under further criticism, with reports that teachers are choosing the examination boards best suited to students.
The Guardian explains that one experienced teacher switched examining authority because "the style of questions in paper 1 has got progressively harder and more tricky".
Taking comments from the teacher's posts to the schoolhistory.co.uk website, the paper reports him saying that he would prefer all exam boards to be at the same standard.
"I hate the fact that we have to shop around and play the system and find the easiest exam board/paper," he commented.
Schools minister Iain Wright has defended the grades achieved by pupils studying core subjects.
"The true picture is that we have seen big increases in attainment in English, maths and sciences in recent years," he said.
