Revamp project for Levenshulme schools

Two schools in Levenshulme are set to benefit from a multi-million pound revamp project, according to a local news report.

Acacias community primary will get an entirely new building while half of Levenshulme high school for girls will be refurbished and the other half rebuilt, the South Manchester Reporter has said.

The £23.7 million project, which is expected to be completed by early 2012, will create 75 new places at Acacias and 15 new places at the school's nursery.

As part of the scheme, the two schools will share the Crossley Road building with new communal kitchen and dining facilities.

In other news, five run-down schools in Gateshead are set to share a pot of more than £80 million of government funding, a local news report has said.

Whickham, St Thomas More and Joseph Swan will all benefit from the government's Building Schools for the Future programme, but the bulk of the funding will be used for the creation of a new school to allow the merger of Hookergate and Ryton schools, the Chronicle Live has reported.
