Potential students 'should not be put off by loan delays'

Pupils pondering a move into university should not let potential student finance setbacks unsettle them, according to the chief executive of educational charity BrightsideUNIAID.

Dr Tessa Stone reassured prospective university students that they should not be discouraged by financial concerns.

"I would say try not to be put off, try not to worry about it. If it does happen again, there will be a lot of people in the same boat," she said.

Dr Stone also urged them to apply as early as possible in order to avoid delays: "Try and get ahead of the deadline and be as efficient as you can, and that gives the system the best chance to be as efficient as it can."

She also said that she believed universities in 2010 will have "a very eagle eye" on the issue of financial concerns. Dr Stone thinks institutions will be watching every move the Student Loan Company make and if it looks as though something is going wrong they'll be much more proactive.
