More Scottish youngsters leave school qualified
March 25 2010
The proportion of pupils leaving schools in Scotland with qualifications has increased, new figures by the Scottish Executive have revealed.
According to the official statistics, the number of students who left school without obtaining Advanced Highers, Highers or Standard Grades dropped to 3.3 per cent in the last academic year, compared to 3.7 per cent in 2007-08.
Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Michael Russell MSP described the figures as "encouraging", according to a report by Herald Scotland.
"We want everyone in Scotland [...] to be given the opportunities that will help them achieve and get the best out of their school education", he reportedly said.
Mr Russell added however that a larger number of "Scots from poorer communities are still leaving school without sufficient qualifications".
In other news, pupils considering a move into university should not let potential student finance setbacks unsettle them, according to the chief executive of educational charity BrightsideUNIAID.
Dr Tessa Stone reassured prospective university students that they should not be discouraged by financial worries.
