Science results are great for the economy

GCSE science results are positive news for the UK economy, says an advisory group.

According to not-for profit organisation Learning and Skills Network (LSN), the number of children taking biology, chemistry and physics GCSEs separately has risen sharply.

LSN helps teachers deliver the Triple Science Support Programme.

Andrew Parsons, assistant director for schools and local authorities at LSN, said that today's exam results "are great news for the economy and a step towards producing more scientists that can lead on the global stage".

The organisation says it could help create a new generation of world-class scientists.

Its assessment of this year's GCSE results revealed 18 per cent more students in England took biology and numbers were up for chemistry (20 per cent) and physics (21 per cent) also.

To recruit more physics and science teachers the government should pay off suitably-qualified students' loans, the Institute of Physics told the Times.
