Brown promises education spending
April 13 2010
Launching Labour's election manifesto, Gordon Brown has pledged to protect front-line spending for education, a news report has said.
According to the BBC, the prime minister said he wanted more successful schools to take over or merge with others that do not perform so well in order to improve them.
He added that he was aiming to see a thousand secondary schools participating in federated chains by 2015. The school partnerships would mean "brilliant educational innovators will lead, not only their own schools, but raise standards in others as well", Mr Brown was quoted as saying by the BBC.
Michael Gove, the schools spokesperson for the Conservative party, attacked Labour's manifesto as "empty".
In other news, the Tories have unveiled plans to introduce Saturday lessons for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, the BBC has reported.
Speaking at the Association of Teachers and Lecturers' conference, Mr Gove said the move would allow a greater number of youngsters to benefit from better access to sport, music and extra tuition.
