East Renfrewshire council to pay stranded teaching staff
April 26 2010
East Renfrewshire authorities have said they will "review" their decision to not pay teachers stranded abroad due to the chaos caused by the volcanic ash, according to a local news report.
Council leader councillor Jim Fletcher said that "no one has had pay deducted", according to the Evening Times.
"We value all of our staff and recognise the efforts they have made to return to work. We will meet the £20,000 per day cost of supply teachers from reserves," Mr Fletcher added.
According to the Evening Times, the local council also said that it will offer all teaching staff affected by the flight ban a series of options to make up lost time, including the option of unpaid leave.
In related news, the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers had urged schools not to penalise teachers who were unable to report to work after the eruption of the Icelandic volcano.
