Irish Teachers' Union says it is not telling teachers to walk out

The Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) has said it is not instructing its members to walk out of lessons if maximum class sizes are exceeded.

The TUI says it is "extremely concerned" at headlines that suggest it is telling teachers to leave classes.

The union stated: "At no time are teachers instructed to walk out of classes or to leave students unattended. This would be wrong, unprofessional and irresponsible."

As well as denying it would force its members to stop work, the union explained it was only advising teachers on the implementation of guidelines already established by the country's department of education and science.

According to RTE News, the TUI had said it may take disciplinary action against teachers who did not follow its guidance.
