School turns to pirates for cash

A special school in Staffordshire is putting on a pirate day event to help gather money for a new playground, a local news report has said.

According to This is Staffordshire, Merryfields special school, based in Wolstanton, needs £69,000 for the completion of the work.

Up until now, it has held a number of sponsored events and fund-raisers to promote the cause.

The pirate day, which will be opened by a crew from Newcastle Fire Station.and will feature stalls, games, a bouncy castle and a prize for the best-dressed pirate, will take place this Saturday.

"We asked the children what they wanted and they asked for hopscotch lines, but we were told nothing could be painted on the playground because it was in a bad way," Sarah Copeland, who sends her seven-year-old son to the school and is also vice-chairman of the governing body and the PTFA, was quoted as saying by the publication.

In other news, teachers in Clifton will participate in a running event aiming to raise money for children overseas, Clifton People has reported.
