Gove appointed new education secretary
May 13 2010
Michael Gove has been named schools secretary in the new government.
The former journalist, 42, has been the shadow secretary of state for children, schools and families since 2007.
Gove has called for a return to traditional values within the classroom, saying that he expects pupils to wear ties and would be in favour of ex-soldiers imposing discipline.
Commenting on his appointment, Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), said Mr Gove's experience as a shadow secretary of state "will be vital, particularly when working alongside the Liberal Democrats in protecting the education budget."
She added that she would be seeking an early meeting with the new secretary to "establish a constructive working relationship with his department".
In other news, the Tories have pledged a shake-up in school discipline in order to put education staff in control of classrooms, according to the BBC.
