Innovative maths teacher lands national advisory role

A Tyneside teacher has been appointed to advise teachers in the UK on how to make the subject more interesting for pupils, a local news report has said.

According to the Journal Live, Debbie Barakat is going to be the new lead practitioner for numeracy for the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT), an education body with more than 5,000 school members which aims to raise achievement levels in secondary schools.

Ms Barakat's appointment comes as a reward for her innovative work at Excelsior Academy.

"Anybody who thinks maths is boring should sit in on one of her lessons," Excelsior school principal Craig Taylor told the publication about Ms Barakat's way of teaching.

"Her enthusiasm and innovation has had a really positive impact on pupils here. Schools across the country are in for a pleasant surprise," he added.

In other news, Nusrat Mohammed has won the Teacher of the Year prize in the first ever Association of Muslim Schools UK awards for her work as a maths teacher at Blackburn's Islamiyah school, according to local news provider The Citizen.
