Teaching staff 'cautious over academy plans'

A number of head teachers are approaching the offer to turn schools into academies with caution, reports suggest.

Last week education secretary Michael Gove wrote to all schools offering them the opportunity to become academies.

But some head teachers remain wary of the offer, believing that more information is needed before a proper decision can be made.

Both the Times and the Guardian have highlighted that some head teachers want to see more details of the offer before making any commitment.

Stourport High School head teacher Liz Quinn told the Guardian that the offer is "short on detail".

Making the offer last week, Mr Gove said: "The Government is genuinely committed to giving schools greater freedoms. We trust teachers and headteachers to run their schools. We think headteachers know how to run their schools better than bureaucrats or politicians."

The offer to register interest in becoming an academy extends to all schools, not just secondary schools, which are the only institutions currently covered by the academy programme.
