Gove confirms plans to scrap GTC

Education secretary Michael Gove has confirmed he plans to scrap the General Teaching Council for England (GTC).

While parliamentary approval for the scrappage is required, Mr Gove has said he intends to pursue such authority, stating that he believes the GTC does not provide value for those in teaching jobs.

Speaking of his decision, Mr Gove said: "I believe this organisation does little to raise teaching standards or professionalism. Instead it simply acts as a further layer of bureaucracy while taking money away from teachers."

He added that the government believes that teachers should be given greater freedoms and unnecessary bureaucracy should be reduced.

Mr Gove said that since his time as the shadow schools secretary he has been unconvinced of the value that the GTC adds to the teaching profession.

The new education secretary recently offered all schools the chance to register their interest in becoming academies - the first time the scheme has been extended to cover primary institutions.
