Teachers 'can have powerful effect'

The extent to which school teachers can affect pupils has been revealed by one famous actor.
Sir Patrick Stewart, who was knighted this week for his services to acting, said that it was an English teacher of his who set him on the path to the stage.
Upon receiving his knighthood, Sir Patrick admitted that he owed "literally everything" to his old teacher, Cecil Dormand.
In testament to the effect that those in the teaching profession can have on others, Sir Patrick said: "Although many people in my life and career have had great influence on me, without this one man, none of it would have happened."
The effect that those with teaching jobs can have on their pupils' performance has also been discussed this week. In an investigative piece for BBC Scotland, Samantha Poling noted that having a better teacher in class can help pupils to achieve more in their work.
