Independent teachers 'well qualified'

Individuals with teaching jobs who hold positions at independent schools generally have a high level of education, it has been claimed.

New research from the Independent Schools Council (ISC) found that some 88 per cent of the 4,175 ISC school teachers surveyed hold at least a degree, while 23 per cent have a master's qualification and six per cent hold a doctorate.

David Lyscom, the chief executive of the ISC, said that the research findings show that the common belief that those in the independent sector are not as appropriately qualified as those in the maintained sector is unfounded.

"It is abundantly clear that despite teaching qualifications not being mandatory in the sector, a high level of directly relevant academic and professional expertise is the norm," he said.

Separately, the ISC found that a relatively small proportion of senior managers in independent schools are contemplating headship, which could potentially lead to recruitment problems for head teacher positions in the coming years, the Times Educational Supplement reported.
