GTC 'will not be missed by teachers'

It is unlikely that educational professionals will miss the General Teaching Council (GTC) now that it is set to be axed.

This is according to Chris Davis, media correspondent for the National Primary Headteachers Association, who said the majority of teachers will not realise that it has gone.

"Most teachers would say that they weren't really aware of what the GTC does for them.

There is a professional registration, but to be honest that could be done in 101 other ways, I'm sure, more simply and less bureaucratically," he commented.

Although the organisation did some good, Mr Davis suggested that the organisation became irrelevant in recent years.

However, the question needs to be asked now who will oversee schools and headteachers. There needs to be some mechanism to deal with disciplinary issues, he added.

In a statement released last week, the GTC said it is seeking legal advice on its position and is seeking clarification from the government over the implications of last week's announcement to close the organisation.
