Room for improvement in RE teaching, Ofsted finds

Improvements could be made to the teaching of religious education, Ofsted has argued.

The education watchdog has stated in a new report, Transforming Religious Education, that there is room for improvement in how the subject is taught.

Drawing conclusions from visits to 94 primary and 89 secondary schools between 2006 and 2009, Ofsted found there to be wide variation in teaching of the subject and the amount of school support for teachers.

The report found that teaching of religious belief was a cause for concern, with many schools not giving enough attention to teaching about Christianity.

While there are some weaknesses, the report did find that a major success of the teaching is "the way it supports the appreciation and understanding of different values by pupils".

Although teaching of RE is statutory, the subject does not form part of the National Curriculum. The content of course syllabuses is determined at the local authority level.
