RE 'needs to be taught better'

Religious education needs to be taught more effectively in schools, it has been suggested.

Sue Fieldman, regional editor of the Good Schools Guide, said children should receive more targeted and specific lessons.

"The problem I see is that the teachers are so paranoid about being multicultural because Ofsted have been banging on about how they have to be multicultural and include all faiths - that poor old Christianity seems to have got lost in the system somewhere," she commented.

Ms Fieldman claimed the curriculum has become so broad that subjects such as sport and religion have been sidelined.

RE should be given a much higher profile as many communities relate to each other through religion, she added.

Ofsted's latest survey on the subject stated that because the RE curriculum is planned locally, there are wide variations in the level of support schools receive from local authorities and advisory councils.
