Increasing number of parents 'appealing school places'

An increasing number of parents in England are lodging appeals over their children's primary school places.

There has been a 16.8 per cent rise over the last year, the BBC reports.

Schools minister Nick Gibb said the figures demonstrate how unhappy some parents are with the school choices that are open to them.

"The level of dissatisfaction underlines why it is so important we change the schools system so providers like teacher groups and charities can open new state schools wherever parents want them," he commented.

However, it was revealed that there has been a decline in the number of parents appealing against secondary school places.

In related news, Sue Fieldman, regional editor of the Good Schools Guide, recently said the new coalition government's plans to expand the academies programme is not necessarily a good idea.

She added that it could widen the gap between the best and worst schools in the UK.
