Parents 'can be a force for change at school'

Having the chance to appeal against their children's school places gives parents a powerful voice and allows them to express their dissatisfaction.

This is according to Amy Schofield, editor of Mychild.co.uk, who said that some people will do everything they can to get their child into a good school.

However, she noted that there is plenty of things parents can do if their appeal is unsuccessful.

"Become a school governor and become part of the decision-making process; volunteer at the school; get involved in whatever way you can," Ms Schofield commented.

She claimed that "parent power is potent", adding that mothers and fathers can be a positive force for change from the inside.

Figures released last week by the Department for Education revealed that there has been an increase in the number of appeals being lodged regarding primary school places in England.
Over 38,000 were submitted in 2008/09, compared to 32,000 the previous year.
