Fewer schools rated outstanding by Ofsted

Fewer schools in England are being rated outstanding by Ofsted, it has been revealed.

Figures published by the organisation this week show that 11 per cent of schools achieved this standard in the last academic year, compared to 14 per cent in 2006/07, the BBC reports.

However, the body noted that a number of schools have improved since they were last reviewed.

According to Ofsted, 42 per cent of the country's educational establishments are good, while 38 per cent were deemed to be satisfactory.

Minister for schools Lord Hill said there is urgent need for reform, with almost half of places not up to scratch.

"We need to create more excellent schools and drive up standards across the board - and that's exactly what our academy proposals will help to do," he told the BBC.

It was revealed last week that an increasing number of parents are appealing against their children's primary school places.
