Money 'should go directly to schools'

Money 'should go directly to schools'

Money for schools is being directed into the wrong places, it has been suggested.

Sue Fieldman, regional editor of the Good Schools Guide, said there is "too much bureaucracy", with officials saying how educational establishments should be run and how children should be taught.

"If they directed the money directly in to the schools, instead of the bureaucrats telling the schools what to do, I'm sure we would have a lot more progress," she commented.

Ms Fieldman noted that it is not helpful for someone in a quango to decide that religious education should be put at the bottom of the pile when teachers and headteachers know it is a crucial part of the syllabus.

According to an Ofsted report carried out between September 1st 2009 and March 2010, nine per cent of British schools are currently rated as inadequate, with 38 per cent performing to a satisfactory level. Just 11 per cent were considered to be outstanding.
