North-west head vows to turn school from 'good to great'

A newly appointed headteacher from the north-west of England has vowed to turn her school from "good to great".

Hilary Torpey is due to take over as principal at Darwen Vale High School in September when she leaves her current post as head of Glenburn Sports College in Skelmersdale.

In an interview with the Lancashire Telegraph, the 52-year-old said she is looking forward to the challenge.

"We have the opportunity to create a first-class learning environment and I want to make sure that we can also transform the lives of the young people who go to school here," Ms Torpey commented.

Darwen Vale is set to undergo a £20 million revamp as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme.

Speaking earlier this week at the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services' Annual Leadership Conference in Birmingham, education secretary Michael Gove said headteachers should be given greater freedom.
