Teachers 'show interest in free schools'

Those with teaching jobs are among the groups who have voiced their interest in starting a free school, a report indicates.

According to the BBC, there have so far been more than 700 groups that have expressed an interest in the Swedish-style free schools, of which half have been made up of teachers.

The free schools idea was one of the key concepts highlighted by the Conservatives ahead of the general election. Such schools could be set up and run by groups of individuals, rather than local authorities. However, they would still be inspected by Ofsted.

Schools would have to give a full business plan before they were given the go-ahead, the BBC reports, noting that they would need to demonstrate their financial viability and give details of the proposed curriculum.

While some of those with teaching jobs have offered their support for the new schools, others have criticised the proposals, suggesting that they could complicate the country's education system.
