Experience 'beneficial for first teaching jobs'

Individuals applying for their first teaching jobs should make the most of the training and experience they gain while completing a PGCE, it has been claimed.

Making the most of the different experiences from a period of teacher training can help individuals in their efforts to secure teaching jobs, Duncan Woodhead from teaching union the Association of Teachers and Lecturers has argued.

He said that all those applying for a particular job are likely to have a similar level of education and have completed a PGCE, so it is other skills and abilities that should be highlighted.

"What is going to be noticeable is involvement in communities, voluntary activity and something to make an application stand out," he said.

He added that the union urges those looking for teaching jobs to do more than just put down generic information; each application should be tailored so that the right skills are most prominent.

Showing what has been learnt on a placement can help to give graduates looking for teaching jobs the edge, he suggested.
