Grammar school teachers 'could support brightest pupils'

A top head teacher has called for more support to be given to the most gifted and able students.

Shaun Fenton, chairman of the Grammar School Heads Association, said the teaching profession has focused on "raising standards to a minimum threshold" over the last few years, to the detriment of improving standards of the most capable pupils, reports the Telegraph.

Mr Fenton said bright youngsters from comprehensive schools should be able to take advantage of expert tuition from state grammar schools and more funding should be diverted to teaching materials aimed at "exceptionally able children".

"Policy makers have rightly focused on raising standards, particularly where there is low achievement," he told the Telegraph.

"That's been right, but grammar schools have a particular interest here - we also need to talk about the most able."

Mr Fenton pointed out that he will use the upcoming conference as an opportunity to highlight the many ways in which grammar schools can play a key role in increasing the educational attainment and results of bright children in schools across the country.
