University commended for teacher training

Those considering a career with a role in a primary teaching job may be interested to hear that Oxford Brookes University has scored highly for the training it provides in its latest inspection.

The university was visited by Ofsted inspectors earlier this year, although the report was only published this month.

It found that the standard of training for primary teaching jobs was high, and for secondary teaching the university was good.

Assistant dean of the Westminster Institute of Education at the university's Harcourt Hill campus, Hilary Lowe, told local news provider the Oxford Mail: "We are confident about what we do because we know we do it well, but we never stop evaluating, thinking about how we can do it better and we know what we need to do to get to the next step."

She added that the university has a diverse range of students and that it provides added value to their education.

Indeed, many of those who qualify from the institution opt to take teaching jobs in Oxfordshire after they qualify, she said.

The university scored less well in its training provision for further education teaching.
