York pupils carry out volunteering work

Students at a number of schools in York have been trying their hand at volunteering work.

Children from eight schools took part in City of York Council's first Volunteering Day earlier this year and a number of other events have now been scheduled, the York Press reports.

Sessions are due to take place before the summer holidays at Manor CE School, St Peter's School, Fulford School, Millthorpe School, Canon Lee Specialist Arts Collehe and All Saints RC School.

Youngsters will discuss how they can get involved in the community through everything from theatre to sports coaching and reading.

Meanwhile, students, past pupils and staff gathered at Clifton Primary School in York this week to celebrate its 40th birthday.

Previously known as Kingsway Junior School, it opened its doors in 1970.

Students attending the school today are marking the occasion by learning about current affairs, fashion and art from the last four decades.
