Maths and science teaching applicants 'on the rise'

An increasing number of graduates are applying to teach maths and science, it has been revealed.

Figures from the Training and Development Agency for Schools suggest the economic downturn has prompted more people to consider a career in education, after the coalition government said front line teaching posts would not be cut.

Applications to teach science have risen by 40 per cent in the last year, with maths increasing by 33 per cent, the Guardian reports.

Frances Wing, head of physics at Nonsuch High School For Girls in Cheam, Surrey, said it is great that more people want to teach in these areas.

"This is because of how vital these subjects are in giving future generations the skills they need to succeed," she told the publication.

Speaking recently, Michael Reiss, professor of science education at the Institute of Education, said children need to get more hands-on practice as far as science is concerned.
