Increasing competitive sports in schools 'can help teach life lessons'

Taking part in competitive sports at school can provide children with valuable life skills, it has been claimed.

Steve Grainger, chief executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said that although many schools still encourage youngsters to get involved in team games, the range of activities on offer is often small.

"If we can really maximise the magic of London 2012, which is just over two years away – and at the end of the day that is all about competition – why not use that to inspire the next generation of kids to get involved?" he commented.

Mr Grainger said those working in skilled sport have been trying very hard to get competitive activities on the agenda for some time now.

A study carried out last month by the Youth Sport Trust revealed that 80 per cent of schoolchildren are excited at the prospect of the 2012 Olympics being held in London.
