Catholic schools 'concerned about academy admission policies'

More Catholic schools may become academies if they are assured that the move will not undermine their ethos, it has been suggested.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Jim Conway, headteacher at Notre Dame High in Sheffield, explained he has expressed an interest in joining the programme in order to get more information from the government.

"There too many unresolved issues on what it would mean in terms of the ownership of land and buildings and whether it would affect our admissions as Catholic schools," he commented.

Mr Conway added that Catholic schools have not been provided with enough detail on what a change to academy status would mean.

The National Grammar Schools Association issued an urgent statement to headteachers earlier this month, urging them not to express interest in becoming an academy until it is clear whether they would be required to accept pupils of all abilities.

It warned that there may be "covert dangers" involved in signing up to the initiative.
