New centre opens 'for children with school phobia'

A new centre has opened in Wales for students who are unable to engage in mainstream education.

The Pathway Education Centre in Newtown will provide lessons for youngsters classified as "school phobic" and those with special medical needs, the BBC reports.

According to Powys Council, it will also provide a base for children who have previously been excluded from school or students who are at risk of this.

"I'm delighted that this new facility will help re-engage pupils into positive and productive education and, where appropriate, their re-integration back into mainstream education," said local councillor David Jones.

The new facility has been opened at a cost of £340,000.

Figures released by the Welsh Assembly Government in January show that school attendance improved in Wales over the last academic year.

Primary school children in Denbighshire did particularly well, registering an average attendance of 94.3 per cent.
