British Gas to launch school solar panel scheme

British Gas has announced plans to donate solar panels to a number of British schools.

Devices worth between £20,000 and £40,000 will be fitted to 750 buildings around the country.

Schools involved in the scheme can expect to cut their annual electricity bills by around 20 per cent, according to the utility firm.

"An added bonus is that any excess electricity they generate, for example through the school holidays, will be able to be sold back into the grid and bring in some extra money for the school itself," the company noted.

British Gas said that as well as helping schools to save money, providing solar panels enables students to learn more about renewable energy and may impact the decisions they make about fuel in the future.

The energy produced by the solar panels will lead to savings of £1.3 million per year for the next 25 years.

According to British Gas, money will be reinvested to fund more green energy technology for schools.
