Government to increase Teach First funding
July 05 2010
The government has announced plans to increase funding for Teach First - an organisation that aims to encourage graduates to work in some of the country's most challenging schools.
Education secretary Michael Gove said it is important that the brightest graduates are recruited in the education sector.
"Our priority is to deliver robust standards and high quality teaching to all, whatever their background. To do this we must attract highly-talented people into education, because the quality of teachers has a greater influence on children's achievement," he commented.
Mr Gove noted that the charity has already been successful, adding that supporting the organisation to expand further will help thousands of children.
Around 560 people entered the Teach First programme in June 2010 - more than double the number that signed up in 2005.
Speaking to the Reform thinktank last week, schools minister Nick Gibb said it is important that children receive a quality education, regardless of their background.
He added that the new coalition government would be guided by the principles of fairness, freedom and responsibility.
