Government to give teachers 'more control'

The government has announced plans to give teachers more control in the classroom.

Schools minister Nick Gibb said school staff will be allowed to search students they suspect of carrying mobile phones, pornography and cigarettes.

Furthermore, officials intend to simplify guidance relating to the use of force by teachers.
He noted that the government is removing red tape so that staff can ensure discipline in the classroom and promote good behaviour.

"Teachers should feel confident in exercising their authority and pupils should not have to suffer disruption to their learning caused by the poor behaviour of others," Mr Gibb commented.

In addition, school staff will have the power to give detentions without providing parents with 24 hours' notice.

Speaking to the Reform thinktank last week, Mr Gibb said the government is keen to give teachers more freedom and offer parents more opportunity to choose the schools they want for their children.
