Closure of BSF programme 'is better than teacher cutbacks'

The decision to axe the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) initiative is better than cutting staff, it has been claimed.

Sue Fieldman, regional editor of the Good Schools Guide, said that although the move is unfortunate, most parents would rather have top teachers than stunning classrooms.

"We have got to cut our cloth according to what money we have and basically if the money isn't there, there is nothing we can do and it may be that in some schools buildings are last on the list and teachers are first," she explained.

Ms Fieldman noted that some of the schemes introduced by the previous government were "overly ambitious".

She added that she is certain the new coalition is targeting debt rather than trying to reduce the standard of education children receive.

Education secretary Michael Gove announced plans to close the BSF programme earlier this week, indicating that the government would only carry out improvement work on the worst schools.
