Pupils with special educational needs 'must have equal opportunities'

It is important that children with special educational needs (SEN) and other vulnerable pupils are well catered for.

This is according to children's minister Sarah Teather, who said the government is keen to make sure that these pupils are provided with the best possible support and care.

"Children with SEN and disabilities should have the same opportunities as their peers. The system needs to be more family friendly so that parents don't feel they have to battle to get the support their child needs," she commented.

Ms Teather is set to launch a Green Paper in the autumn and will look at the results of the Ofsted review due later this year.

The new coalition government revealed last week that it will base its education policies on fairness, freedom and responsibility.

Schools minister Nick Gibb said it aims to offer every child a good quality of schooling.
