Cbeebies presenter to host reading sessions for teachers

Cbeebies presenter and teacher Chris Corcoran has been selected as Wales' first ever reading hero.

Education minister Leighton Andrews will formally make the announcement regarding his appointment at a School Effectiveness Framework conference at the University of Wales Newport.

Mr Corcoran is expected to run sessions with teachers, speaking about his own experiences in the classroom and his passion for books.

"I once missed a breaktime coffee as a pupil excitedly described to me in great detail the plot of the longest Harry Potter - earlier he had arrived in the UK unable to speak English. There's very little as empowering as reading," he commented.

Mr Andrews noted that encouraging schoolchildren to read from a young age stands them in good stead for the future.

The Welsh Assembly Government launched a campaign last year called Read a Million Words Together, in a bid to encourage young boys to read more.
