Government apologies for BSF list errors

Education secretary Michael Gove has apologies in the House of Commons after it emerged that a list relating to the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme contained a number of errors.

Several schools were wrongly informed that their planned construction projects were safe when that is not the case.

Mr Gove apologised unreservedly and said the revised list is as "complete as possible and as accurate as possible".

He has vowed to visit the schools affected to say sorry in person for the blunder.
Shadow education minister Vernon Coaker described the error as "frankly astonishing".

Meanwhile, Conservative backbencher Ian Liddell-Grainger has threatened to march on Number 10 with parents and schoolchildren from his constituency.

The government announced plans earlier this week to scrap the BSF initiative, saying refurbishment work would only be carried out on the schools most in need of repair.

Sue Fieldman, regional editor of the Good Schools Guide, said that although the move is unfortunate, it is preferable to teaching job cuts.
