Welsh education minister unveils new language plan
July 13 2010
Welsh education minister Leighton Andrews has announced a new plan aimed at driving improvement and innovation in the teaching of foreign languages.
It will be delivered in partnership with CILT Cymru and the initiative will be aimed at students between the ages of 14 and 19.
The government aims to ensure that the first three years of language learning in secondary schools are challenging and that pupils are encouraged to continue with them.
"In the world of work, knowledge of languages helps economic growth and business competitiveness through improved understanding of the business environment and intercultural understanding," Mr Andrews stated.
It was revealed that as well as GCSEs and A-levels, students will be offered a range of flexible learning options.
A study commissioned by the National Centre for Languages earlier this year revealed that foreign language capability is only second to IT in terms of the skills employers want.
