Free schools 'could give disadvantaged children chance of success'

The government's free schools plans have been criticised by some, but could provide disadvantaged children with opportunities.

This is the opinion of teacher and writer Jennifer Beckles, who suggested that free schools could be a force for good if established in deprived areas.

In an article for the Guardian, she noted that it could be similar to Labour's academies programme, but with more parental involvement.

"Being a founding member of a new school is an opportunity to engage with the education system in a new, meaningful, positive and powerful way: a chance for parents to influence its setting up, running and management," she commented.

This kind of involvement can be beneficial for children as it can boost morale and drive up standards, Ms Beckles explained.

It was revealed last month that over 700 groups have expressed interest in running their own schools.

Speaking last month, education secretary Michael said it is part of the government's plans to take bureaucracy out of education.
